“But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.” 1 John 1:9
Nothing is better than starting the day with a hot shower. The warm water gently wakes up both the body and the soul. The smell of soap rejuvenates the senses, and the soft sound of water coming down gives the mind a chance to mentally prepare for the day ahead. But the most important reason for daily showers is keeping the body clean and smelling fresh. Washing off the dirt and oils that collect on the skin and scalp is necessary for physical health.
As Christians, our inner soul needs regular cleaning, too. Sinful thoughts and actions can quickly pollute the heart, leaving a stinky odor everywhere we go. Maintaining a pure heart means dealing with sin regularly. Thankfully, God provided a method to rid ourselves of the filth that can collect in our hearts and minds. My pastor calls it “The Christian Bar of Soap,” and it’s found in 1 John 1:9:
“But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
Confession is the soul’s hot shower, washing away sin and presenting us pure before God. From the moment of conversion through Christ, all transgressions – past, present, and future are forgiven. However, ongoing confession is needed because Christians still sin. Yep, we do! Without regularly acknowledging our trespasses, the scum and residue of sin can break our fellowship with God. Recognizing and admitting our weaknesses, shortcomings & wrongdoings keeps hearts and minds clean and covers us with the sweet smell of Jesus.
Next time you take a shower, let the soap and water remind you that your insides need a bath, too. Then, remember 1 John 1:9, “The Christian Bar of Soap,” and let it lead you to a time of confession. Just as your body is cleansed, your soul will be purified, and your connection to God unhindered.
REFLECT
Are you engaged in a regular time of confession? If not, will you stop right now and ask God to search your heart & mind and reveal to you any sin that needs to be acknowledged today?
Many Blessings,
