“Listen to my voice in the morning, LORD. Each morning, I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.” Psalm 5:3
What’s the first thing you reach for when you wake up? Your phone? The coffee pot? Your to-do list? King David made a different choice. He gave his first minutes to God, writing, “Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.”
As J. Vernon McGee wisely noted, “The morning is a mighty good time to lift your heart to God in prayer.” There’s something sacred about those quiet moments before the world awakens. Like David, we’re invited to bring our requests, hopes, and fears to God’s throne before checking emails, scrolling social media, or tackling our to-do lists.
But here’s the challenge: hitting snooze or diving straight into our daily tasks is so easy. Sometimes, we convince ourselves we’ll pray later, but later often never comes. When I find myself choosing other activities over morning prayer, I’ve learned to pause and ask: What am I valuing more than time with my Creator?
The God of the universe—the great I AM—eagerly awaits the first minutes of your day. David reminds us not just to pray but to “wait expectantly.” This means first giving Him our undivided attention, knowing that He listens and answers.
Morning prayer isn’t just a religious routine – it’s our daily compass, aligning our hearts with His truth before the day’s demands begin. Through Jesus, we can enter each new day confident that God hears our prayers and welcomes our presence.
