“A person without self-control is like a city with broken-down walls.” Proverbs 25:28
When you hear the words “self-control,” what comes to mind? For many of us, it feels like a list of “don’ts” – don’t eat that cookie, don’t say those words, or don’t react in anger. But what if we’ve been looking at self-control all wrong? What if, instead of seeing it as a restriction, we viewed it as God’s loving protection?
In biblical times, city walls weren’t restraints – they were refuges. These massive structures kept citizens safe from invading armies, wild animals, and marauding thieves. A city with strong walls thrived; a city with broken walls lived in constant danger. How fascinating that God chose this powerful image to teach us about self-control!
Just as Hezekiah “worked hard to repair all the broken sections of the wall” (2 Chronicles 32:5) when threatened with attack, we too must identify and strengthen our vulnerable areas. Maybe it’s when we’re tired, hormonal, or feeling offended – those moments when emotions run high and wisdom runs low. Our “walls” of self-control stand guard, protecting us from the devastating consequences of gossip, angry outbursts, or impulsive decisions.
But here’s the transformational truth: God’s desire isn’t to restrict us—it’s to protect us. He knows an unguarded life leads to chaos and regret. When we choose to be governed by His wisdom rather than our impulses, we’re not missing out; we’re dwelling in safety. With each deep breath we take before responding, each moment we pause to pray instead of react, we reinforce our walls and invite God’s peace to rule within.
When you feel tempted to let your guard down, envision those ancient city walls. Remember that self-control isn’t punishment – it’s protection. God’s boundaries aren’t meant to confine you; they’re designed to keep you safe and help you thrive.
REFLECT
In what situations do you find your “walls” most vulnerable? How might viewing self-control as protection rather than restriction change your response to those challenging moments?
