Only fools say in their hearts, ‘There is no God.'” Psalm 14:1a (NLT)

Have you ever scratched your head in bewilderment when someone boldly declares that God doesn’t exist? As Christian women, we find ourselves confused by such statements because God’s existence seems so evident to us. How can anyone deny what is so obvious?

David understood this bewilderment when he penned Psalm 14. The Hebrew word “nabal” that David uses for “fool” describes someone who is empty-headed—not intellectually, but morally. These are individuals who stubbornly reject wisdom and refuse to acknowledge the truth. You might remember Nabal from 1 Samuel 25—Abigail’s husband, whose very name meant “fool.” He was wealthy and capable, but his heart was hard toward God.

Like Nabal, people today often deny God’s existence not from lack of evidence, but because it’s convenient. This mindset is appealing because if there’s no God, there’s no ultimate authority, no absolute morality, and no accountability. They can define right and wrong for themselves and continue living however they please.

But before we shake our heads too vigorously at these “fools,” we need to examine our hearts for the hidden fool that might be lurking there. While we would never outright deny God’s existence, could there be areas where we act as if He doesn’t exist?

Do we include God in our entertainment choices—what we binge-watch or read? Do we consider His presence in our private thoughts or in the words we speak to others? What about those “guilty pleasures” we rationalize away?

Our hearts are deceitfully cunning, and this is where the hidden fool emerges. We can compartmentalize our lives, keeping God in the “Sunday morning” box while living Monday through Saturday as if we’re in charge. We might gossip, harbor bitter thoughts, or numb our emotions with food, shopping, or endless scrolling—all while knowing deep down that God would disapprove.

The searching question we must ask ourselves is this: “Are there areas where we act like fools, too?” Not because we deny God’s existence, but because we live as if He’s not watching or involved in that particular area.

As women who love Jesus, we want to expose any hidden foolishness and invite Him to reign in every corner of our hearts and lives. This means refusing to box off parts of ourselves simply because we want to indulge in sin or maintain control. Set aside time this week to invite God into every area of your life. Ask Him to search your heart and reveal any places where you’ve been living as if He doesn’t exist, then surrender those areas to Him.

REFLECT

Is there a “guilty pleasure” or area of your life that you haven’t fully surrendered to God? What would change if you truly included Him in that area?
